The Canine Eye Registration Foundation is an organization committed to eliminating heritable eye disease in all purebred dogs through the formation of a national registry. The CERF Registry not only registers those dogs certified free of heritable eye disease by members of the ACVO, but also collects data on all dogs examined by ACVO Diplomates. This data is used to form the CERF database which is useful in researching trends in eye disease and breed susceptibility. A veterinary ophthalmologist is a veterinarian who specializes in the treatment of eye disease and ocular disorders and is certified by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO). This certification requires at least four years of additional training beyond the eight required for veterinary school, which includes a one-year internship and a three-year residency.
